Carnival Corporation has announced an elevated sustainability goal, aiming for a 25% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions intensity by 2029, using 2019 emissions levels as a baseline. This target comes in the wake of the company achieving its previous goal of a 20% reduction by 2030 five years ahead of schedule, specifically in 2025.
The initiative, detailed in the recently published 2025 Sustainability Report, indicates that the efforts not only contribute to environmental goals but also result in significant cost savings; it is projected that Carnival will save around $650 million in 2026 by enhancing fuel efficiency compared to 2019.
Josh Weinstein, CEO of Carnival Corporation, remarked that reaching the 2030 target early reflects their commitment to disciplined investment and innovation. He emphasizes that the exploitation of new technologies and operational efficiencies is crucial to further lowering emissions and remaining competitive in the industry.
Since 2008, Carnival has made significant strides, cutting its GHG emissions intensity by 44%, effectively halving the emissions associated with each guest sailing.
The approach to meeting the new 2029 target includes a combination of operational improvements, energy efficiency investments, and low-GHG power solutions. This encompasses smarter ship operations, fuel-efficient route planning, and advanced technologies aimed at reducing energy demand and enhancing ship performance.
One notable initiative is Carnival’s collaboration with Jotun for the Hull Skating Solution (HSS), becoming the first cruise line to implement this robotic hull-cleaning technology, which is designed to enhance efficiency.
Looking forward, Carnival plans to introduce seven new ships to its fleet by 2033 that promise over 20% greater efficiency per passenger than existing models. Additionally, the company is advancing its fleet of LNG-powered vessels, expanding shore power capabilities, and looking into biofuels as more supply becomes available, along with utilizing battery storage systems for energy management during peak consumption.
