Quark Expeditions’ Ships Witness Stunning Solar Eclipse Over Greenland

Guests aboard Quark Expeditions’ ships, the Ultramarine and Ocean Explorer, had the unique opportunity to witness the total solar eclipse on August 12, 2026, from Harefjord, Greenland. This event marked the first total solar eclipse visible in the region since 2015 and featured a totality lasting approximately two minutes and 15 seconds. The path of totality spanned across both Greenland and Iceland, making it one of the longest durations observable worldwide.

Several experts accompanied the guests to enhance their viewing experience. Notably, David Baron, a seasoned science journalist and author of "American Eclipse," shared his insights. Having witnessed nine total solar eclipses before, Baron reflected on the beauty of the Arctic setting: “Gazing at the glorious corona above the rugged terrain of Scoresbysund, I felt as if I had been transported to an alien world." He emphasized the significance of such experiences, which have drawn visitors throughout history.

Onboard the Ocean Explorer, eclipse cartographer Michael Zeiler enriched the guests’ knowledge by discussing eclipse viewing and celestial mechanics during the 17-day voyage. Zeiler had meticulously mapped the eclipse and highlighted Scoresbysund as a prime viewing location. He expressed the thrill of seeing the results of his calculations come to life: “From the deck of Ocean Explorer, guests experienced two minutes and 15 seconds of totality. Seeing the map become real… never gets old.”

In addition to these exclusive insights, both voyages offered a new Guided Photography Program designed to help guests capture stunning images of the eclipse amidst the breathtaking polar landscape, ensuring that memories from this celestial phenomenon would last a lifetime.
