A Minnesota man is currently in critical condition in an Italian intensive care unit following a tragic incident on the Sun Princess Cruise Ship, where he sustained a severe cervical spinal cord injury during his son’s wedding celebration on August 16.
According to a GoFundMe page created by his family, Steve Junker was discovered face down and unresponsive in the ship’s pool. He was quickly transported to a hospital in Naples by the Italian coast guard, where he was admitted to the intensive care unit and placed on a ventilator.
Upon his arrival at the hospital, a successful emergency surgery was performed. However, due to the extent of his injuries, he was diagnosed as quadriplegic and is unable to breathe independently. Currently, he is not only fighting for his life but also battling a separate infection likely related to his near-drowning incident.
Junker’s family is facing difficulties navigating the Italian healthcare system as they seek to transfer him back to the United States for ongoing treatment and recovery. The GoFundMe, which aims to support his medical costs and transport, has raised over $2,000 thus far, reflecting the urgent need for their financial support. The family stresses that they are encountering significant challenges in communicating with his healthcare providers and gaining access to necessary medical records.
Efforts are underway to facilitate his return to America as he continues to fight for his life in the intensive care unit.
