National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions has made its debut in the European river cruise market with the launch of its first voyage on August 15. The inaugural itinerary, "Holland and Belgium: Medieval History & Scenic Waterways," features a 7-night cruise that operates between Amsterdam and Brussels. During this journey, stops include Kampen (with a land tour to Giethoorn), Arnhem, Rotterdam, The Hague (which offers a canal boat cruise to Delft), Kinderdijk (notable for its windmill network), Antwerp, and Ghent.
This program is based on a long-term charter agreement for the luxury riverboat Transcend Connect from Transcend Cruises. The company has ensured a full expedition experience for its guests, supported by an Expedition Leader, Field Staff, and at least one National Geographic Expedition Expert for guided visits, private tours, tastings, and additional culturally immersive activities.
The cutting-edge, 120-passenger Transcend Connect, constructed in 2025, boasts panoramic windows, modern accommodations, and technology tailored specifically for river operations. This vessel will cruise through various European destinations, including Germany, France, and the Netherlands, while maintaining the expedition-oriented essence of the program.
Trey Byus, Lindblad’s CEO, remarked that this inaugural sailing represents the company’s strategic entry into European waterways, enabling them to leverage their established expedition methods across the continent. Following this, in September, the company will operate another itinerary titled "Rhine River: Castles, Culture and Culinary Delights," which will also be on Transcend Connect. This 7-night journey will traverse the Rhine Gorge—a region celebrated for its vineyards and historic scenery—between Cologne and Basel, visiting key cities such as Mainz, Frankfurt, and Heidelberg in Germany, as well as Strasbourg and Colmar in France’s Alsace region.
Looking ahead, Lindblad aims to further expand its operations in 2027 with the introduction of Transcend Evolve, which will focus on Christmas Market cruises, effectively doubling the fleet for Nat Geo-Lindblad in Europe and extending its expedition offerings into the winter months.
