Cruises have resumed from Philadelphia for the first time in 15 years, thanks to the opening of a new $60 million cruise terminal on the Delaware River, developed by Norwegian Cruise Line and PhilaPort. The terminal aims to boost local tourism and has already created around 2,200 jobs.
Margarete James, a frequent cruiser from Hilton Head, expressed her satisfaction with the newly opened terminal, noting it made her travel experience more convenient. She found the hotel rates more affordable and appreciated the free shuttle services to the cruise ship.
The terminal’s ribbon-cutting ceremony, attended by officials including Mayor Cherelle Parker, marked the beginning of resumed cruise services. Officials highlighted the economic benefits expected from these cruises, which bring travelers into the city, supporting local hotels, restaurants, and attractions.
With a projected support for 2,185 jobs and $108 million in wages annually, the terminal is also expected to yield significant tax revenues for the region. Mayor Parker emphasized the historical connection of Philadelphia’s port to global trade, suggesting that the terminal will provide renewed economic opportunities.
PhilaPort was revitalized as an alternative cruising option as more cruise companies are adopting a trend called homeporting, bringing ships closer to major population centers. Experts believe that this convenience will attract more cruisers from surrounding areas. Norwegian Cruise Line has committed to a seven-year agreement with the port, planning 41 sailings annually to destinations such as Bermuda and Canada.
The terminal’s construction faced several challenges, including increased costs due to harsh weather conditions. Nonetheless, the Norwegian Jewel, capable of accommodating 2,330 guests, began welcoming passengers this past April.
As the cruise industry becomes increasingly competitive, the revival of the Philadelphia cruise port is not just about convenience but also about positioning Philadelphia as a destination once again. Local officials are optimistic about the potential growth and the positive impact on the region’s economy as cruise services expand.
