Nor Cruises Secures Agreement for Up to Five New Cruise Ships

Nor Cruises has made a significant move in the maritime sector by signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for the construction of up to five new cruise ships. The announcement took place during a ceremony at the SMM Hamburg trade show, indicating a commitment to two ships with options for three additional vessels. These ships, weighing 82,000 tons each, are set to be built at the Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Company, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC).

This agreement marks a milestone as it would be the first large-ship order placed by a foreign company with CSSC. While explicit details about the ships remain undisclosed, reports suggest that their design may be influenced by Fincantieri, a prominent shipbuilding company.

Nor Cruises, which was established in early 2023, operates under the corporate identity of Nor Cruises AS. Initially founded as Venera Nor AS, the company focuses on providing technical and project consultancy within the maritime industry. Their annual filings for 2025 indicate an intention to build a cruise ship, although they are actively seeking to secure additional capital. To date, they have raised approximately $1.4 million, alongside $180,000 in loans from shareholders, and have proceeded to gather another $310,000 this year, with loans also contributing to their funding efforts.

The company faces challenges in raising funds, specifically aiming to attract investments from the Middle East, where current conditions have complicated their efforts. However, the board maintains an optimistic outlook, believing they will be able to finalize the necessary financing through equity or convertible loans soon.

Nor Cruises has yet to hire employees but lists Terje Berg Adolfsen as its general manager and Knut Christian Abrahamsen as the chairperson. Both individuals possess extensive backgrounds in the maritime sector, having worked for various Norwegian companies with expertise in insurance, ship management, and offshore activities.

In addition to the MOU with Nor Cruises, CSSC is reportedly moving forward with orders from another cruise line, Adora Cruises, which plans to construct two large ships in China as well. CSSC is also in discussions with other prospective clients, including Resorts World Cruises, which operates the StarDream Cruises brand.
