MB Energy has successfully completed a methanol bunkering trial on TUI Cruises’ Mein Schiff 7 at the Ostseekai Cruise Terminal in the Port of Kiel, marking a significant step in the partnership aimed at utilizing lower-carbon marine fuels.
During the trial, approximately 25 cubic meters of methanol, sourced from renewable feedstocks, was delivered primarily for the ship’s onboard boiler systems. The logistics of this operation were managed by Johs. Martens, who ensured the fuel was transported using a truck powered by HVO 100, a lower-carbon alternative to conventional diesel.
The bunkering process coincided with Mein Schiff 7’s other operations at the pier, illustrating the feasibility of supplying methanol to large passenger vessels in standard port conditions. This operation provided valuable insights for future methanol bunkering initiatives.
MB Energy’s CEO, Jonathan Perkins, emphasized that the successful trial demonstrated how methanol could be safely integrated into cruise operations. He further highlighted the cooperation with TUI Cruises and Johs. Martens as essential to proving the infrastructure and expertise necessary for lower-carbon maritime operations.
The fuel supply chain covered every aspect, from sourcing and storage to transportation and delivery, and contributes to MB Energy’s broader plans for methanol handling in the maritime sector, particularly in northern Europe. The company is advancing its storage capabilities in Hamburg-Blumensand, aiming to facilitate larger supplies of methanol and ammonia.
Perkins noted that the combination of dedicated storage facilities and cohesive logistics would allow MB Energy to maintain a steady methanol supply. The trial with Mein Schiff 7 showcased the potential for collaboration between ship operators, ports, and energy suppliers in the development of alternative marine fuels.
