Royal Caribbean Shocks Travelers by Cancelling Entire Alaska Cruise After Passengers Board Due to Technical Glitch

Cruise passengers found themselves in a frustrating situation recently when a Royal Caribbean voyage was abruptly canceled after they had already boarded the ship. The Serenade of the Seas, which had its departure scheduled from Vancouver on August 30, faced technical issues that led to a last-minute cancellation.

Just days before the scheduled departure, guests were notified that their cruise would be shortened to five nights due to ongoing maintenance issues, with a revised itinerary announced for a departure on September 1. Many guests, particularly families like that of Arielle Anderson from South Carolina, were disheartened as they had been anticipating the trip for months.

Despite Royal Caribbean offering full refunds, cruise credits, and reimbursement for flight change fees, many passengers had already incurred travel expenses to reach Vancouver. In a bid to make the most of their situation, some, like Anderson, opted to explore nearby Whistler instead of canceling.

On September 1, after boarding the ship, passengers went through immigration and awaited departure. However, time passed without further information, leading to confusion among guests. Eventually, it was announced that the entire sailing was canceled, prompting a rush for alternate travel arrangements.

Passengers had until midnight the following day to leave the ship, leading to a flurry of activity as many scrambled to find flights and accommodations. Anderson described the unsettling scene as passengers collected in a bar area, anxiously checking their phones for updates.

Royal Caribbean issued an apology through a spokesperson, emphasizing their commitment to accommodate passengers as best as possible given the circumstances and offering impacted guests the previously mentioned options to manage their disrupted travel plans.

Anderson’s family managed to rent a car and secure a vacation rental nearby, adjusting their plans to still enjoy some time in the area. Though it was not the Alaskan adventure they had envisioned, they were determined to make the best of their unexpected situation. The Serenade of the Seas eventually departed for a subsequent Alaskan cruise on September 6.
