Viking has unveiled its latest advancement in eco-friendly cruise technology by floating out the Viking Astrea, a new hydrogen-powered ship. This significant event took place at Fincantieri’s Ancona Shipyard in Italy, where the ship will undergo final construction and interior work before its planned delivery in May 2027.
The Viking Astrea will accommodate 998 passengers and is the second ship in Viking’s fleet designed with a hydrogen-based propulsion system. This innovative technology enables the ship to operate with zero emissions, making it an environmentally conscious option for cruising. It follows the Viking Libra, which is set to enter service in November 2026.
Leah Talactac, President and CEO of Viking, expressed the company’s commitment to creating more efficient ships. “The float-out of the Viking Astrea represents another important milestone for Viking,” she stated, emphasizing the importance of ongoing advancements in ship design.
The ship features a hybrid propulsion system that combines liquefied hydrogen and fuel cells, supported by technology from Isotta Fraschini Motori (IFM), capable of producing up to six megawatts of power. This advancement will allow the Viking Astrea to access environmentally sensitive areas while providing a luxurious cruising experience.
