RCAF Performs Medivac Operation from Celebrity Solstice Cruise Ship Off the Coast of BC, Canada

A passenger aboard the Celebrity Solstice encountered a medical emergency while the ship was located approximately 200 km (125 miles) northwest of Port Hardy, British Columbia. The incident occurred early in the morning on September 12th, prompting a swift response from the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF).

The RCAF’s 442 Transport and Rescue Squadron, operating out of 19 Wing Comox, directed the search and rescue mission in coordination with the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Victoria. Utilizing a CH-149 Cormorant helicopter and a CC-295 Kingfisher aircraft, the team commenced the rescue operation before dawn.

The Cormorant helicopter was the first to reach the cruise vessel, allowing the onboard rescue team to liaise with the ship’s captain about the evacuation. Two search and rescue technicians were lowered onto the deck to prepare the ill passenger for extraction. Subsequently, both the patient and a companion, along with medical personnel, were lifted into the helicopter.

After the successful transfer, the helicopter flew the group back to Comox, where the patient was handed over to BC Emergency Health Services. They were then taken to a hospital for further evaluation and treatment. Details regarding the passenger’s health status have not been disclosed.
