A fire severely damaged the Chugach Glacier Gateway Cruise Terminal in Whittier, Alaska, on September 14, 2026. The state fire marshal’s office has declared the facility a total loss after flames broke out around 11:00 a.m. and were not fully extinguished until approximately 12:30 p.m. the following day. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries or fatalities.
The fire affected a high-speed catamaran operated by Phillips Cruises & Tours, although no passengers were onboard during the incident. The Norwegian Cruise Line ship, Norwegian Jade, was docked nearby but was able to depart without sustaining damage.
The terminal, which spans roughly 500 feet, was developed in collaboration with Huna Totem Corp. and Norwegian Cruise Line, opening its doors in 2024. Firefighting efforts were hindered by the lack of a working hydrant near the dock. The Anchorage Fire Department revealed that around 112,000 gallons of water were transported to combat the blaze using engines and tenders from both the Anchorage and Girdwood fire departments.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing. The absence of a hydrant led to discussions about alternative methods for firefighting. Some suggested that fire engines could utilize hard-suction hoses to draw water from nearby bodies of water, albeit this would require the proper equipment and protocols.
