A cruise ship carrying more than 3,300 passengers and crew collided with a container vessel while departing Bremerhaven, a North Sea port in Germany, in stormy conditions on Sunday. Police initially said two ships were involved, then reported that three vessels had been involved. TUI Cruises said its ship, Mein Schiff 3, collided with one container ship.
There were 2,428 passengers and 922 crew members aboard. No injuries were reported. The ship returned to the pier, where specialists are assessing the damage, and passengers were allowed to remain on board. TUI Cruises said it would share further details once reliable information was available.
Video verified by dpa shows the cruise ship leaving the harbor with tugboats in choppy water. It appears to move close to a container ship moored beside the harbor wall before striking it. Debris is visible in the footage, along with damage to Mein Schiff 3 and its lifeboats.
Local newspaper Nordsee-Zeitung reported that the impact tore a hole about 10 meters long in the container ship. The full extent of the damage has not been established.
Police said the cause of the collision remains unknown. Water police are investigating, and authorities were expected to provide more information on Monday.
