Cruise Ship Performer Breaks Down Her Monthly Paycheck—and the Perks That Come With It

Royal Caribbean performer Alley Kerr shared how her pay changes depending on whether she is working at sea or on land—and why the job’s benefits are a major part of the compensation.

Cruise ships require large crews to serve passengers and keep operations running. Kerr, who shares her experiences online as Wanderlust Alley, said her earnings depend on her contract and the additional duties she takes on.

Pay while the ship is docked

During periods when the ship is in port or the cast is preparing for a new production, Kerr said she earned $300 a week—about $1,328 a month—under a contract from two years ago.

She noted that this phase can be financially difficult for performers. Although she could stay in a crew cabin, some usual benefits, such as all-inclusive meals, were unavailable. Food, transportation, and basic supplies could add up, especially when shops were far away.

Pay at sea

Once the ship was sailing, Kerr’s base pay rose to $3,800 a month. Her duties included performing and maintaining a Broadway-style show, rehearsing, taking part in safety drills, and assisting other entertainment staff.

Additional responsibilities could increase her monthly earnings:

  • Aerial performance: $450
  • Vocal performance: $1,000
  • Understudy duties: $180, plus $100 for each performance she covered
  • Company manager or dance captain: $1,200

With these extra roles, Kerr said she earned about $6,500 a month at sea on that contract.

The job also came with benefits, including housing, meals, health coverage, and the chance to visit ports during time off. Those perks can substantially reduce living expenses, though life aboard ship means working far from friends and family.
