Huna Totem Unveils $80M Cruise Terminal: Elevating Visitor Experiences in Whittier, Alaska

Huna Totem Corporation has launched a new cruise terminal in Whittier, Alaska, with an investment of $80 million. This state-of-the-art facility, located in the scenic Prince William Sound approximately 60 miles southeast of Anchorage, features a double-berth pier and welcomed its inaugural vessel in September.

The terminal’s development marks a partnership among the City of Whittier, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH), and Huna Totem Corporation. Situated on 20 acres of private land, it offers a breathtaking backdrop of tranquil waters and rugged mountains. While NCLH secures the primary scheduling rights, the terminal is accessible to other cruise lines as well.

This new addition enhances the existing dock operated by Princess Cruises and Holland America Line and comes at a critical time when cruise lines are diversifying their port options, especially after Juneau imposed a limit on the number of vessels allowed daily.

The facility’s design is versatile, featuring movable partitions that allow for various configurations of hospitality spaces and excursion bookings. Future plans include the incorporation of local artwork and historical imagery, creating a stronger connection to Whittier’s cultural heritage.

Amenities also cater to bus services, and plans are underway to establish rail connections to Anchorage. Moreover, Huna Totem owns ample land for potential expansions, which might feature retail shops, dining options, and a cultural center. Immediate upgrades will introduce picnic areas, fire pits, and a broader range of tours, including kayak rentals, charter fishing, and wildlife observation.

The terminal is projected to accommodate 27 ship arrivals in 2025, serving vessels from Norwegian Cruise Line, Regent Seven Seas, and Oceania. Huna Totem Corporation, which comprises approximately 1,600 Indigenous shareholders from Hoonah, has experience in developing cruise facilities in Alaska, notably Icy Strait Point, which opened in 2004, and Port Klawock, operational since 2024. The Whittier terminal reflects Huna Totem’s commitment to fostering sustainable tourism and enriching community engagement in Alaska’s coastal regions.
