Tragic Capsizing of Car Ferry Off South Korea’s Coast: 5 Missing, 2 Rescued

An 83-ton car ferry capsized off the southwestern coast of South Korea on the evening of December 30, 2024. The incident left two individuals rescued while five others remain missing, according to reports from the Korea Coast Guard.

The accident occurred around 6:35 PM local time (9:35 AM UTC) in waters west of Seosan, approximately 100 km (60 miles) southwest of Seoul. At the time of the incident, the ferry was carrying a total of seven people.

The Coast Guard successfully rescued two passengers and has initiated a search operation for the five who are unaccounted for. Rescue efforts are facing challenges due to strong tidal currents in the area, complicating the operation, as noted by authorities.
