Tragic Incident: 82-Year-Old Passenger Dies in St. Maarten Cruise Port Accident
The Sint Maarten Police Force (KPSM) reported a tragic incident on December 26th at the Dr. A.C. Wathey Cruise and Cargo Facility in Philipsburg. An 82-year-old cruise ship passenger lost his life after falling into the sea around 5:00 PM local time while using an electric wheelchair.
Emergency responders, including police and medical personnel, arrived quickly to provide assistance. Initial investigations suggest that a malfunction in the wheelchair may have played a role in the accident. Despite their efforts to resuscitate him, the passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.
KPSM expressed their condolences to the family and friends of the deceased. While the exact identity of the passenger and the cruise ship involved have not been confirmed, it is believed he may have been aboard an AIDA Cruises ship, specifically the AIDAmar.
On the same day, the Philipsburg port welcomed several other ships, including the Queen Mary 2, Emerald Azzurra, P&O Arvia, Symphony of the Seas, and Celebrity Ascent.
