Costa Smeralda Successfully Completes LNG Bunkering in Dubai

Costa Smeralda, a cruise ship operated by Costa Cruises, recently achieved a significant milestone by completing its liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering at Dubai Port. This operation, which took place on January 8, 2025, involved the LNG tanker Green Zeebrugge, which successfully filled Costa Smeralda’s three cryogenic tanks with 3000 m³ of LNG. This quantity is expected to fuel the ship for approximately 2.5 weeks.

The LNG bunkering was made possible through collaboration with logistics provider Monjasa and the Dubai Port Authority. This event marks a pioneering step in introducing LNG technology to Dubai’s maritime industry, showcasing Costa’s commitment to sustainable cruising and cleaner energy alternatives.

Costa Smeralda arrived in Dubai on December 21, following a repositioning cruise around Africa. After its winter operations in Dubai, the ship is set to embark on a 37-day journey to Europe and the Mediterranean, stopping at various locations including Oman, Mauritius, South Africa, and Morocco, before reaching Genoa on April 7.

This successful LNG bunkering operation underscores Costa Cruises’ dedication to advancing eco-friendly practices in the cruise sector and establishing benchmarks for sustainable operations in the region.
