Brisbane Cruise Terminal Celebrates Milestone: Welcoming 2 Million Passengers
The Brisbane International Cruise Terminal (BICT) in Queensland, Australia, has achieved a significant milestone by surpassing 2 million passenger movements, just two and a half years post-inauguration. This celebration took place on January 18, 2025, coinciding with the arrival of the P&O Australia ship, Pacific Encounter.
This visit may mark the last for the ship under the current name, as Carnival Corporation plans to rebrand it to Carnival Encounter in March 2025, as part of a strategy to phase out the P&O Australia brand. Peter Little, Carnival Corporation’s Country Manager, emphasized the successful collaboration with BICT and highlighted the terminal’s pivotal role in bolstering Queensland’s thriving cruise industry.
The BICT, which opened in June 2022 after facing delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, was built at a cost of USD 110 million. Prior to its construction, vessels longer than 270 meters had to dock at cargo terminals, leading many cruise lines to avoid Brisbane. The terminal is now a crucial asset for cruise tourism in the region, contributing approximately USD 620,000 to the local economy with each ship visit.
Forecasts suggest that cruising will generate USD 700 million for Queensland over the next decade. For the upcoming 2024-2025 season, BICT anticipates over 150 cruise calls from 13 different cruise lines, reinforcing Brisbane’s status as a key cruise destination.
