Exploring Europe: AmaWaterways Partners with Smithsonian Journeys for Unforgettable River Cruises
AmaWaterways recently announced a partnership with Smithsonian Journeys to launch a series of European river cruises beginning in April 2026. This collaboration will see 33 departures along notable rivers such as the Danube, Rhine, Douro, Seine, and Rhone, with voyages lasting between eight to 15 days.
Each cruise will offer exclusive experiences designed by Smithsonian Journeys, which will include lectures and insights from experts in various fields like art history, archaeology, and anthropology. The aim is to give guests a comprehensive understanding of the local history, traditions, and cultures as they explore these vibrant regions.
Rudi Schreiner, co-founder and president of AmaWaterways, stated that the collaboration aims to help guests connect deeply with their destinations rather than simply visiting. He noted that by merging AmaWaterways’ river cruising expertise with Smithsonian’s commitment to cultural and educational experiences, travelers can gain richer insights into the areas they visit.
Echoing this sentiment, Walter Littlejohn III, senior vice president of Smithsonian Journeys, expressed enthusiasm about extending the Smithsonian experience to Europe’s rivers aboard AmaWaterways’ vessels. He emphasized the importance of lifelong learning and discovering authentic experiences for travelers, allowing them to indulge in the rich cultural tapestry of countries like Austria, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Portugal through a unique lens.
The inaugural cruises will commence in April 2026, and there are already booking options available. Each cruise will also provide pre- and post-cruise land packages, accompanied by an AmaWaterways cruise manager, giving guests the chance to explore beyond the set itinerary.
