Exploring Europe: AmaWaterways and Smithsonian Journeys Join Forces for Unforgettable River Cruises
AmaWaterways has forged a partnership with Smithsonian Journeys, the travel program of the Smithsonian Institution, to introduce a series of co-branded European river cruises beginning in April 2026. This collaboration will offer 33 voyages along prominent rivers in Europe, including the Danube, Rhine, Douro, Seine, and Rhone.
These immersive journeys will last between eight and 15 days and will feature exclusive experiences provided by Smithsonian Journeys. Participants can expect to engage with experts like art historians and archaeologists, who will share insights on local history, traditions, and cultures throughout the travels.
Rudi Schreiner, co-founder and president of AmaWaterways, indicated that the partnership aims to transcend typical sightseeing by fostering meaningful connections between guests and the destinations. By blending river cruising with Smithsonian’s commitment to cultural enrichment, travelers will gain a deeper appreciation of the regions they explore.
Walter Littlejohn III, senior vice-president of Smithsonian Journeys, expressed enthusiasm for delivering the Smithsonian experience across Europe’s rivers on AmaWaterways’ vessels. He highlighted the focus on lifelong learning and authentic exploration, which will present intellectually curious travelers with new avenues to engage with the rich histories and cultures of various countries, including Austria, France, Germany, and Portugal.
The inaugural cruises are set to launch in April 2026, with bookings now open. Each itinerary will be complemented by pre- and post-cruise land packages, guided by an AmaWaterways cruise manager, allowing for further exploration beyond the cruises themselves.
