Exploring Europe: AmaWaterways Partners with Smithsonian Journeys for Unforgettable River Cruises

AmaWaterways has announced a collaboration with Smithsonian Journeys to offer a series of co-branded European river cruises beginning in April 2026. This partnership will include 33 departures along significant rivers in Europe, such as the Danube, Rhine, Douro, Seine, and Rhone, with cruise durations ranging from eight to 15 days.

The cruises will be enhanced with unique experiences curated by Smithsonian Journeys, featuring lectures and insights from various experts, including art historians, archaeologists, scientists, and historians. This initiative aims to deepen guests’ understanding of the local history, traditions, and cultures of the regions they will explore.

Rudi Schreiner, co-founder and president of AmaWaterways, highlighted that the collaboration seeks to foster a deeper connection between travelers and the destinations. He noted that combining river cruising with Smithsonian’s educational focus allows guests to gain enriching insights into local ways of life while enjoying high-quality comfort and service aboard AmaWaterways’ vessels.

Walter Littlejohn III, senior vice-president of Smithsonian Journeys, expressed enthusiasm about this initiative, emphasizing the commitment to lifelong learning and exploration. The partnership promises to create authentic experiences for those interested in the rich histories and cultures of countries like Austria, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Portugal.

The first cruises are set to launch in April 2026 with booking options available now. Each cruise will also offer pre- and post-cruise land packages, led by an AmaWaterways cruise manager, allowing for extended exploration beyond the main itinerary.
