Nice, France Reconsiders Large Cruise Ship Ban Amid Growing Business Concerns
Christian Estrosi, the Mayor of Nice, France, has revised his earlier decision to prohibit large cruise ships from docking in the city. Initially, in January, he enacted a decree banning vessels carrying over 900 passengers due to concerns about overtourism and environmental degradation. While this move was supported by environmental advocates, it faced criticism from local businesses and the cruise sector.
In response to the intense pushback, Estrosi has proposed a compromise where ships with a capacity of up to 2,500 passengers can anchor in the bay and transport passengers ashore via tender boats. Larger vessels would be redirected to other ports such as Cannes or Marseille, and smaller ships accommodating fewer than 450 passengers would still be permitted to dock in Nice. Furthermore, the plan restricts cruise ship visits to one per day.
The amended strategy aims to reconcile public health objectives with the economic needs of the community. According to the port authority, this compromise will allow approximately 65 out of the 90 scheduled cruise arrivals for the summer of 2025, significantly less than the estimated cruise tourist influx that would have occurred under the original ban, which was expected to reduce arrivals by 70%.
The cruise industry, represented by the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), expressed surprise at the initial ban, highlighting that no large cruise ships were set to arrive at the Port of Nice in 2025, with only a few expected to anchor near Villefranche-sur-Mer. CLIA reiterated its commitment to sustainable tourism and plans to continue working with local ports and municipalities.
This situation underscores the ongoing challenges Mediterranean ports face in balancing the economic advantages of tourism with its environmental and social impacts. Similar discussions are taking place in other tourist hotspots, such as Venice and Barcelona, concerning the management of large cruise ships.
