MS The World Enters Major Dry-Dock at Navantia Shipyard: A New Chapter in Luxury Cruise Experience

MS The World, the largest privately-owned residential vessel in operation, is set to undergo an extensive dry-dock period at Navantia Shipyard in Cádiz, Spain. This planned 6-week maintenance, which is part of the ship’s standard triennial dry-dock cycle, aims to maintain operational integrity and enhance onboard systems.

During the dry-dock, a variety of structural, mechanical, and aesthetic upgrades will be implemented. Notably, a High Voltage Shore Connection (HVSC) system will be installed, allowing The World to utilize shore power while docked. This development will enable generator shutdowns while in port, significantly cutting down on fuel consumption and emissions, thus meeting shore power mandates in locations like California and Europe.

Furthermore, the vessel’s hull will see efficiency improvements, including the replacement of its bulbous bow with a design aimed at reducing hull resistance by about 10%, which will contribute to lower greenhouse gas emissions. A new silicone-based antifouling coating will also be applied to decrease hydrodynamic drag and marine biofouling, enhancing fuel efficiency.

In terms of comfort and amenities, chillers and fan coil units will be upgraded to boost HVAC efficiency. Refurbishments will occur in hospitality areas, with Deck 11’s Pool Bar & Grill being redesigned to optimize food service and guest capacity, featuring a larger bar and enhanced pantry facilities. Deck 12 will also see improvements, with the putting green being resurfaced and a golf simulator installed in The World Golf Club to provide a virtual experience of over 100 global courses, complete with ball-tracking technology.

The Aqua Spa will expand its wellness facilities to include a new cold plunge pool, enhancing thermal therapy options, while treatment rooms will receive heated flooring and updated equipment.

Marine operations will also be enhanced with the addition of a custom 10-seat Zodiac Pro 850, designed for various excursions including wildlife observation. Elevators on the ship will be upgraded in collaboration with KONE for improved safety and reliability.

Additionally, around 50 private residences will receive varying refurbishments, including updates to flooring, cabinetry, and appliances, ensuring they meet modern living standards at sea.

Acknowledging the vessel’s rigorous maintenance program, Det Norske Veritas (DNV) will issue a Statement of Extended Life after confirming that The World’s physical condition aligns with a ship just 5.6 years old, indicating remarkable structural longevity.

Once the dry-dock enhancements are complete, The World will recommence service with improved environmental compliance, operational efficiency, and upgraded resident amenities, continuing its legacy as the only fully residential mega yacht in continuous operation with a global itinerary.
