Viking and Fincantieri Unveil Plans for Hydrogen-Powered Cruise Ships

Viking, in collaboration with Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri, has announced the construction of Viking Libra, which will be the world’s first hydrogen-powered cruise ship. The vessel is being built at Fincantieri’s Ancona yard and is set for delivery in the fourth quarter of 2026.

This innovative ship marks a crucial step towards cleaner maritime operations by utilizing a hybrid propulsion system that combines liquefied hydrogen and fuel cells. Developed in partnership with Isotta Fraschini Motori, a Fincantieri subsidiary, this system will generate up to 6 MW of power, allowing the ship to operate without any emissions. The design enables access to ecologically sensitive regions often limited to traditional vessels due to emission restrictions.

Torstein Hagen, Chairman and CEO of the Viking Group, emphasized that the company has long been committed to efficient fuel design across its fleets, which includes both river and ocean vessels. He noted that the Viking Libra, alongside its sister ship Viking Astrea, will significantly boost the line’s environmental credentials. Viking’s investment in hydrogen technology reflects its commitment to achieving true zero-emission performance.

Fincantieri’s CEO Pierroberto Folgiero described Viking Libra as a landmark achievement, marking the first cruise ship powered by onboard-stored hydrogen, and underscoring the company’s strategy to lead the maritime industry towards sustainability.

Viking Libra is part of a broader initiative, with construction of Viking Astrea also underway, scheduled for delivery in 2027. Additionally, agreements have been reached for two more ocean vessels with deliveries expected in 2031, along with potential options for two additional ships in 2033.

Viking’s vision includes expanding its fleet significantly, aiming for 110 river vessels by 2028 and a total of 23 ocean and expedition ships by 2031. This expansion plan reinforces Viking’s position as a leader in sustainable and experience-driven cruising.
