Hurtigruten’s Otto Sverdrup Set to Return to Its Original Name: MS Finnmarken
In May 2025, Hurtigruten plans to revert the name of the ship currently known as MS Otto Sverdrup back to its original title, MS Finnmarken. The vessel, which was first launched in 2002, underwent a name change in 2021 after becoming part of Hurtigruten’s expedition division, HX. Following its return to the main fleet in 2024, the ship will embrace its heritage with a name that honors Norwegian coastal regions, natural wonders, and significant cultural figures.
Hurtigruten’s CEO, Hedda Felin, expressed that the name Finnmarken is steeped in historical importance for both guests and employees, as well as for the Norwegian coastline. This change marks a renewal of a tradition that reflects the company’s commitment to preserving maritime history.
This MS Finnmarken will be the third vessel in Hurtigruten’s legacy to carry this name. The first, launched as DS Finnmarken in 1912, operated for 44 years, while the second, built in 1956, served until 1993. Both are showcased at the Hurtigruten Museum in Stokmarknes, where visitors can explore the latter in its entirety and parts of the former.
The current MS Finnmarken will continue to traverse the North Cape Line, providing journeys between Hamburg and Honningsvag. This route has gained popularity among the German market, and Marius Griego, Hurtigruten’s Vice President of Sales & Marketing for the DACH region, highlighted the effective blending of international departures with genuine Norwegian coastal experiences.
