Dramatic Riverboat Collision: 127 Passengers Evacuated After Bijou du Rhone Hits Barge Near Sablons
In the early hours of May 11, 2025, the riverboat MS Bijou du Rhône, operated by Nicko Cruises, was involved in a collision with a barge on the Rhône River near Sablons, located in the Isère department of southeastern France.
At the time of the accident, the riverboat was carrying 127 German tourists. The collision caused damage to the ship’s hull above the waterline, although immediate flooding or sinking concerns were alleviated due to the nature of the damage. The barge, however, sustained considerable structural harm.
In response, French authorities swiftly enacted evacuation procedures for both passengers and crew. They were transported by bus to their intended destination later that day, with no injuries reported among those onboard.
