MSC Cruises Expands World Class Fleet with Two New LNG-Powered Ships

On May 19, 2025, MSC Cruises entered into a contract with French shipbuilder Chantiers de l’Atlantique for the construction of two new WORLD Class ships, expected to be delivered in 2029 and 2030. These vessels, initially named World Class 5 and World Class 6, will expand the fleet to six ships in total, showcasing MSC’s dedication to European shipbuilding and maritime innovation.

The upcoming ships enhance MSC’s commitment to sustainability, being powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) and featuring advanced dual-fuel engines that aim to reduce methane emissions by about 30% compared to previous technologies. Additionally, they are designed to accommodate alternative fuels, such as bio and synthetic LNG, and green methanol, aligning with MSC’s goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

These vessels will be equipped with features such as shore power connectivity to minimize dockside emissions, advanced wastewater treatment systems, and comprehensive energy efficiency measures. The existing World Class ships already exceed the International Maritime Organization’s Energy Efficiency Design Index standards, and these new additions promise to further enhance the fleet’s environmental performance.

Pierfrancesco Vago, Executive Chairman of MSC Cruises, emphasized the importance of this milestone, highlighting the longstanding partnership with Chantiers de l’Atlantique and the shared expertise in developing advanced ships that push industry boundaries. Laurent Castaing, General Manager of Chantiers de l’Atlantique, remarked that World Class 5 and 6 would signify a crucial advancement in terms of energy efficiency within the cruise sector.

With these new ships, MSC Cruises continues to affirm its leading position in the cruise industry, dedicating resources to sustainable practices and innovative design in ship operations.
