Couple Shares Their Harrowing Experience After Dramatic Rescue by Carnival Cruise Ship Crew

Dustin Leonard and Helena Franczak were recently rescued by the crew of the Carnival Splendor after their catamaran encountered a fierce storm in the South Pacific. Their adventure began with dreams of sailing around the world, accompanied by two crew members and their three dogs.

The couple was en route to Fiji when a violent storm struck, dismantling their vessel’s masts and leaving them stranded over 170 nautical miles from New Caledonia. Leonard described the situation as terrifying for everyone on board, but he attempted to keep spirits up by reassuring the crew that they were safe, despite the dire circumstances.

After their catamaran was damaged, they shot a flare into the sky to signal for help. Fortunately, the Carnival Splendor, captained by Eduardo Ferrone, spotted their distress signal. Captain Ferrone likened the rescue approach to maneuvering an elephant through a china shop, highlighting the precision required to navigate the large cruise ship towards the small catamaran safely.

After a careful five-hour diversion, the Carnival Splendor’s crew safely brought Leonard, Franczak, their crew, and their dogs on board. Upon arrival, the couple was relieved to find attentive staff and the comforts of the cruise ship. Their dogs quickly became the center of attention among other passengers.
