MSC Plans Ambitious 4-Ship Fleet of the World’s Largest Cruise Vessels
MSC Cruises is reportedly in advanced talks with Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland to create a new class of ships, tentatively named the "Constellation" class. These ships are expected to be the largest in the world, exceeding Royal Caribbean’s ICON class in both volume and passenger capacity. Each vessel is projected to be approximately 365 meters long and have a gross tonnage of around 265,000, surpassing the ICON OTS’s 250,800 gross tons.
This initiative was introduced during a strategic meeting at MSC’s training center in Sorrento, Italy, where executives outlined plans for significant fleet expansion, focusing on ultra-large vessels. The Constellation class is anticipated to include four units, representing a notable advancement in MSC’s growth strategy.
Traditionally, MSC has partnered with shipbuilders like Chantiers de l’Atlantique in France and Fincantieri in Italy. Collaborating with Meyer Turku signifies a shift, aligning with the shipyard’s involvement in Royal Caribbean’s ICON class projects.
Although MSC has yet to officially confirm the Constellation class, the anticipated vessels are expected to utilize advanced technologies that promote sustainability and efficiency. This initiative aligns with MSC’s broader commitment to environmental responsibility, as seen in their recent orders for LNG-powered World Class ships, which focus on maximizing energy efficiency and minimizing carbon footprints.
Should these plans come to fruition, the Constellation class would redefine MSC’s standing in the cruise industry, setting new standards for ship size and capacity, highlighting the company’s ambition in the next era of mega ship cruising.
