Coast Guard Launches Investigation into Near-Collision of Cruise Ships in Juneau Due to Storm Conditions
The U.S. Coast Guard is investigating a near-miss incident involving two cruise ships in Juneau’s port, which occurred on Monday when one ship drifted loose from its moorings during a severe storm. The investigation is routine and aims to determine if any safety protocols could be improved.
Lt. Matt Naylor, a public affairs officer for the Coast Guard’s Southeast Alaska sector, noted that there were no reported injuries or significant damage. Videos from local residents have been instrumental in their investigation.
The storm prompted the National Weather Service to issue the first-ever severe thunderstorm warning for Juneau. High winds and heavy rain contributed to the cruise ship Celebrity Edge breaking free from its moorings at AJ Dock and drifting toward another ship, the Carnival Luminosa, which was also docked.
The Celebrity Edge eventually stopped drifting after dropping anchor and did not collide with the Carnival Luminosa. The latter was able to maneuver safely away from the situation. After the event, the Coast Guard called for additional public video submissions to aid in their investigation, which they have since received in abundance.
As of now, the length of the Coast Guard’s inquiry remains unclear, but officials expressed gratitude that the situation did not escalate into a more serious incident.
