TUI and HD Hyundai Join Forces to Pioneer Hydrogen SOFC Power Solutions for Cruise Ships

TUI Cruises has entered a collaboration with South Korean shipbuilders and the European classification society DNV to develop solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) systems powered by hydrogen for cruise ships. This initiative, involving companies such as HD Hyundai and HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, is under a joint development agreement aimed at establishing safety and design standards for SOFC applications in maritime environments by February 2026.

HD Hyundai will evaluate the operational performance of the fuel cells under various conditions and aims to create a system that can reclaim and repurpose the heat produced by the high-temperature SOFC units. TUI will provide essential data regarding cruise ship requirements and operational specifications to support the adaptation of this technology for marine use.

The SOFC technology demonstrates significantly higher efficiency than conventional combustion engines, leading to reduced emissions and pollutants. Its flexible design for using emissions-free fuels facilitates a smoother transition toward decarbonization.

While there is growing interest in SOFC technology within the maritime sector, its commercial viability remains uncertain. For instance, Bosch recently decided to halt its SOFC development in favor of proton-exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysis, highlighting a broader apprehension towards the market uptake of SOFC systems.

Nonetheless, research efforts in Asia, particularly in South Korea and Japan, are actively pursuing the potential of SOFC technology. This partnership positions TUI Cruises at the forefront of innovation in the maritime industry as it aims to adopt cleaner and more efficient propulsion systems aligned with emerging environmental regulations and standards in the cruise industry.
