Genting Dream Arrives in Phuket for Vital Maritime Emergency Drill
On July 9th, the MS Genting Dream made headlines in Phuket, Thailand, as it served as the centerpiece for a significant maritime emergency drill known as the Passenger Ship Exercise 2025. This comprehensive drill was conducted by Thai maritime authorities at the Deep Sea Port, with support from various agencies including the Royal Thai Navy and local health services.
The primary goal of this drill was to assess Thailand’s preparedness for maritime emergencies in accordance with SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) regulations. The exercise involved realistic simulations aboard the ship, including lifeboat evacuation practices, man-overboard rescue operations, and responses to onboard fire scenarios. Notably, firefighters from the Phuket Provincial Administrative Organisation and the Navy vessel HTMS Panyi participated in tackling a simulated fire alongside the ship’s crew.
Admiral Phairoj Fuangchanchai, the Director-General of Thai-MECC, officially commenced the drill, which was overseen by Rear Admiral Benjamaporn Wongnakornsawang. High-ranking officials, including Vice Admiral Suwat Donsakul, observed the proceedings, highlighting the importance of maritime safety.
In addition to onboard activities, a tabletop exercise took place at the Royal Phuket City Hotel, aimed at testing communication, coordination, resource deployment, and command protocols for crisis management. Prior to the practical drills, thorough equipment checks and personnel readiness assessments were conducted to ensure that all elements were primed for a real-world situation.
