Viking Brahmaputra: Navigating a New Era on India’s Historic River
Viking has announced its entry into the Indian river cruise market with the Viking Brahmaputra, set to welcome its first guests in late 2027. This luxurious vessel, designed to accommodate 80 guests, will navigate the picturesque Brahmaputra River in Assam. Under the new “Wonders of India” program, the ship will operate a 15-day roundtrip itinerary between Guwahati and Nimati Ghat, featuring 8 nights aboard the ship alongside guided excursions in major cities including Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur.
The vessel boasts Viking’s hallmark Scandinavian design, with staterooms featuring floor-to-ceiling glass doors that open onto private verandas. Guests can also enjoy public spaces such as a spa, fitness center, and an open-air Sky Bar on the upper deck.
The itinerary begins and ends in Delhi, incorporating visits to renowned UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the Taj Mahal in Agra and Jaipur’s Palace of Winds. Along the Brahmaputra, travelers will experience visits to local temples, riverside villages, and wildlife in Kaziranga National Park, famous for its one-horned rhinoceroses and diverse fauna. Additionally, the journey includes cultural encounters on river islands like Majuli.
Viking is offering enhancement options for the itinerary that include pre- and post-cruise extensions to destinations like Dubai, Kathmandu in Nepal, Cochin, and Mumbai, all fully guided.
Viking’s Chairman and CEO expressed that India’s rich cultural and natural heritage attracts explorers, and these river journeys provide a deeper way to explore the country from the luxury of a modern riverboat. This initiative marks a significant shift for Viking, moving from traditional port calls to immersive inland experiences.
Currently, bookings for the “Wonders of India” voyages are open until July 31, 2025, with promotional offerings that include discounts of up to $5,000 per couple for North American travelers, airfare starting from $999 per person, and a fully refundable deposit of $25. The launch of Viking Brahmaputra signifies the cruise line’s ambitious expansion into South Asia, significantly enhancing its river cruise offerings.
