Ritz-Carlton Ilma’s Debut in the UK: A New Era for Portsmouth

On July 8th, Portsmouth International Port marked a significant milestone by welcoming the Ritz-Carlton Ilma, the first LNG-powered cruise mega-yacht to dock in the UK. The Ilma, operated by The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, brought along 386 passengers eager to explore Portsmouth during its inaugural UK call before continuing a 9-night voyage around the British Isles.

Port operations manager Andrew Williamson heralded the arrival as a celebration of sustainable luxury. He noted that the Ilma embodies a crucial evolution for the port, showcasing not only a prestigious vessel from the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection but also the incorporation of LNG propulsion and shore power technology.

Constructed in Saint-Nazaire, France, Ilma began its service in October 2024. The luxurious yacht features 224 suites, each with private terraces, and can accommodate up to 448 guests, ensuring an exceptional level of service with a high staff-to-guest ratio. Guests enjoy a variety of amenities including five dining venues, seven bars, a wine vault, a spa, pools, fitness studios, and a marina terrace with direct sea access.

The use of LNG dual-fuel engines and shore-power readiness reflects a forward-thinking approach to sustainability, aligning with Portsmouth’s broader strategy for decarbonization. The port is working to complete its shore-power infrastructure later this year, making it increasingly attractive to environmentally conscious vessels.

After its UK debut, Ilma was set to depart Portsmouth for Holyhead, with further stops planned in Liverpool, Greenock (Glasgow), Dublin, Cobh, and Amsterdam. The Ritz-Carlton Ilma is expected to return to Portsmouth in the summer of 2026 as the port becomes a prominent player in luxury yacht cruising.

This inaugural call not only illustrates evolving standards of luxury and sustainability in maritime travel but also emphasizes Portsmouth’s growing reputation as a premier destination for high-end cruise experiences.
