Aurora Expeditions’ Douglas Mawson Successfully Completes Sea Trials: A New Era in Exploration

Aurora Expeditions’ latest vessel, the Douglas Mawson, has successfully completed its sea trials off the coast of Hainan, China, from June 26 to July 2, 2025. This accomplishment confirms its readiness for delivery scheduled in September 2025.

As the final addition to SunStone’s Infinity-class series, the Douglas Mawson joins its sister ships, Greg Mortimer and Sylvia Earle. The new ship will set sail on its maiden voyage to Tasmania in December 2025, followed by its inaugural Antarctic season that retraces the routes of the legendary explorer after whom it is named. A complete voyage for the 2025–2026 season, which includes the Epic Antarctica crossing, is also planned.

The Douglas Mawson can accommodate 154 passengers (130 for polar expeditions), featuring 86 staterooms. It is built on the Ulstein CX103 design, with an X-BOW hull that enhances sailing comfort and efficiency even in rough seas.

Equipped for intense polar conditions, the ship has an ice-strengthened PC6 hull and Tier III engines. The sea trials rigorously tested its safety and efficiency systems, including Safe Return to Port certification, all following standards set by the Nantong Maritime Safety Administration.

Onboard, travelers can take advantage of amenities like a lecture theatre, Citizen Science center, heated outdoor pool, sauna, gym, various dining options, mudroom facilities, and Zodiac embarkation platforms—all designed for low-impact exploration and sustainability.

Aurora’s commitment to responsible travel is highlighted by the ship’s LNG-ready configuration and energy-efficient systems. CEO Michael Heath emphasized that the sea trials are crucial in realizing the vessel’s full potential, with plans in place to welcome expeditioners for immersive journeys later this year.
