Catania Port Unveils Pier 25: A New Third Cruise Berth for Mega Ships

Catania Port, located in Sicily, Italy, has recently announced the completion of significant modernization efforts at Pier 25, enhancing its capacity to accommodate cruise ships. Managed by Global Ports Holding (GPH), the port is now better equipped to serve the growing cruise market in the Mediterranean.

The modernization project has introduced a new deepwater berth, measuring 405 meters, which can host some of the world’s largest cruise vessels. Key improvements include the restoration of a minimum berth depth of 9 meters, as well as upgrades to heavy-duty bollards and fenders to meet current safety standards. An adjacent land area of 7,000 square meters has been allocated for buses and logistics, facilitating smoother passenger transfer from ship to shore.

This new berth complements the existing facilities at the central pier and another nearby quay that is slated for further enhancements by early 2026. The upgrades were overseen by the Eastern Sicilian Sea Port System Authority, with Engineer Francesco Di Sarcina highlighting the need for dredging and structural improvements to cater to anticipated increases in vessel traffic.

Raffaella Del Prete, General Manager of GPH Italian Cruise Port, emphasized that this addition allows for the simultaneous docking of multiple large cruise ships, which is essential for managing the increasing passenger volumes and ensuring efficient ground transportation.

Catania is strategically positioned as a gateway to Eastern Sicily, near attractions like Mount Etna, Taormina, and Syracuse, along with other UNESCO World Heritage sites. The recent developments aim to bolster the port’s appeal as a preferred stop for Mediterranean cruises seeking to deliver authentic Sicilian experiences alongside operational reliability.

With these changes, the port’s modernization is aligned with projected traffic goals through 2027, showcasing a commitment between GPH and the Port Authority to position Catania as a key destination in the Mediterranean cruise industry.
