Norwegian Cruise Line’s Strategic Updates for 2026 European Sailings

Harry Sommer, the president and CEO of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, announced during the company’s second quarter earnings call that all three of its cruise brands will be shortening itineraries in Europe for the year 2026. This strategic adjustment comes with an overall reduction of six percent in European deployment, dropping to 19 percent of the company’s cruise mix, down from 25 percent in the current year.

Sommer explained the changes, noting that in the upcoming quarters, the fleet’s presence in Europe will decline from 31 and 44 percent to 26 and 38 percent, indicating a modest but deliberate adjustment. He emphasized that this decision reflects the current consumer demand environment and is a response to recent changes in booking patterns.

Despite these alterations, Sommer remained optimistic, stating the company is well positioned for next year’s bookings, particularly for European sailings. He acknowledged some challenges earlier in the year, attributing them to a dip in consumer confidence but mentioned a rebound in demand starting in May.

Mark Kempa, the executive vice president and CFO, supported Sommer’s remarks, revealing expectations for occupancy rates around 105.5 percent for the third quarter. He highlighted that despite some initial softness in bookings for long-haul European sailings, demand improved throughout the quarter, and pricing remained strong.

Kempa also pointed out that itineraries are typically planned two to three years in advance, which means the adjustments align with long-term strategic planning rather than immediate market fluctuations.
