Cruise Ship Fails Health Inspection: Record Low Score Raises Concerns

On July 9, 2025, the Odyssey received a failing score of 81 during a health inspection by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), making it the lowest score of the year. While a passing score is 86, this inspection unveiled serious issues, primarily relating to the ship’s potable water system.

Significant findings noted during the inspection revealed that the chlorine levels in the drinking water were frequently below the required minimum, and there was a concerning connection between the water purification system and a gray water tank, raising the risk of cross-contamination.

Inspectors also documented various other violations:

  • Food Safety & Equipment Issues: A greasy waffle iron was improperly stored, leading to violations regarding cleanliness. Several refrigerators were out of order or holding food at unsafe temperatures.
  • General Maintenance Problems: Conditions such as poor deck upkeep, dusty areas, and standing water were cited, alongside swimming pools lacking proper safety signage.
  • Pest Control Concerns: The presence of fruit flies in the pantry indicated ongoing issues with pest management.

The Odyssey, which has a 30-year history and was formerly known as the MS Braemar, was bought by Villa Vie Residences in late 2023 with the intention of transforming it into a residential cruise ship. However, the vessel’s debut in May 2024 was delayed due to various technical difficulties, including rudder stock problems. Villa Vie’s founder, Mikael Petterson, publicly acknowledged the challenges involved in rejuvenating a decades-old ship.

Currently, the Odyssey is beyond U.S. waters, and any re-inspection won’t occur until it returns to a port in the U.S. Despite its troubles, Petterson noted that many of the findings stemmed from the ship’s age and the fact that it was not designed to meet modern U.S. health standards. The company has pledged to address the reported issues and expressed confidence that future inspections will yield improved results.
