AmaWaterways Expands Smithsonian Journeys Partnership: Introducing 42 New River Cruises for 2027

AmaWaterways has announced an expansion of its partnership with Smithsonian Journeys, adding 42 new river cruise sailings for 2027. This initiative includes two new itineraries: one through France, covering the Seine, Saône, and Rhône rivers, and the other in Southeast Asia on the Mekong, which travels through Vietnam and Cambodia.

This collaboration draws on Smithsonian Journeys’ 175-year legacy as a global authority in museum, research, and education, aiming to enhance travelers’ cultural experiences. Each cruise will feature onboard experts from various fields including history and anthropology, offering specialized shore excursions focused on cultural engagement and interaction with local communities.

The expanded itinerary follows the initial launch for 2026, which includes 11 different routes covering popular rivers like the Danube and Rhine. Guests will also have the option of pre- and post-cruise land extensions guided by AmaWaterways’ cruise managers, allowing for deeper explorations of the areas visited.

Catherine Powell, CEO of AmaWaterways, stated that the partnership intends to ignite travelers’ curiosity and foster meaningful connections with destinations. Walter Littlejohn, Senior Vice President of Smithsonian Journeys, mentioned the strong demand for 2026 trips as the reason for the early announcement of these new 2027 voyages. The new Mekong itinerary joins already established popular European river routes.

Onboard amenities for these cruises will include diverse dining options, a wellness program with fitness sessions, daily cocktail hours, inclusive beverages during meals, and a variety of small-group excursions and airport transfers.
