Cruise Lines Adjust Itineraries Amidst Strengthening Hurricane Erin in the Caribbean
Major cruise lines are altering their itineraries in response to Hurricane Erin’s intensifying presence in the Caribbean. As of August 15th, the National Hurricane Center reported that Erin’s sustained winds were approaching 70 miles per hour, with expectations for rapid strengthening over the coming days.
A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for regions including Anguilla, Barbuda, St. Martin, and St. Barts. Forecasts indicate that Erin could develop into the first hurricane of the Atlantic season, potentially reaching Category 3 status. While the hurricane is not anticipated to have a significant impact on the southeastern United States, it does present a risk to Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
In response to these developments, Royal Caribbean International has adjusted the itinerary of the Vision of the Seas. The ship will now divert from its originally planned two-night stay in Bermuda to instead dock in Port Canaveral.
Similarly, Disney Cruise Line has announced changes for the Disney Treasure, which has departures scheduled from Florida on Saturday. The ship will forgo visits to Tortola and St. Thomas, opting instead for alternate ports including Cozumel, George Town, and Falmouth. Disney has noted that further changes may occur depending on the progress of the storm.
