Viking Gyda Riverboat Arrives in Viana do Castelo for Douro River Cruises

On August 29, 2025, the Viking Group received its latest river vessel, the Viking Gyda, at the WestSea shipyard in Viana do Castelo, cementing its place in Viking’s fleet. Designed for the Douro River in Portugal, the Gyda reflects Viking’s Scandinavian design aesthetic and is part of the 10-day “Portugal’s River of Gold” itinerary.

Torstein Hagen, the Chairman and CEO of Viking, expressed pride in the ship’s arrival, noting how Portugal’s rich history and winemaking traditions attract many travelers. The Viking Gyda accommodates 106 guests in 53 staterooms and marks the addition of a fifth vessel to Viking’s Douro fleet, which includes the Viking Helgrim, Viking Hemming, Viking Osfrid, and Viking Torgil.

This delivery is part of Viking’s strategic expansion, with plans to add 26 additional river ships by 2028, increasing its total river fleet to 112 vessels. The company also aims to enhance its ocean and expedition offerings, with the introduction of 10 new ocean ships by 2031, resulting in a combined fleet of 23 vessels.
