SunStone Wraps Up Infinity Series with the Launch of Douglas Mawson
SunStone Maritime Group A/S has marked an important milestone by completing its inaugural Infinity-class series with the delivery of the Douglas Mawson on September 9, 2025, at China Merchants Heavy Industry in Haimen. This vessel represents the seventh and final ship in the series.
The Douglas Mawson will operate under a long-term charter with Aurora Expeditions, joining its two sister ships, the Greg Mortimer and Sylvia Earle. Named after the famed Australian geologist and explorer Sir Douglas Mawson, this ship further establishes SunStone’s presence in the expedition cruising sector.
The design and construction of the Douglas Mawson involved a collaboration of international expertise. It features a hull designed by Norwegian naval architects at Ulstein, stylish interiors from Tomas Tillberg Design USA, and Finnish craftsmanship by Mäkinen. The ship ensures high safety and comfort standards, emphasizing fuel efficiency.
With an overall length of 104.4 meters, a beam of 18.4 meters, and a draft of 5.3 meters, the vessel can accommodate up to 170 passengers alongside a crew of 102. It bears Ice Class 1A and Polar Class 6 certifications, allowing it to navigate polar and temperate waters safely. Its advanced features, including Safe Return to Port, virtual anchoring, zero-speed stabilizers, and the innovative X-Bow design, are focused on ensuring guest comfort and safety.
Onboard amenities include a swimming pool, several dining options, lounges, a boutique, gym, spa, and sauna, providing guests with a luxurious experience during their expeditions.
With this delivery, SunStone completes its first phase of the Infinity-class rollout, transferring the Douglas Mawson to Aurora Expeditions for future voyages.
