Stena Line Signs Long-Term Contract at Port Gdynia: What It Means for the Future of Shipping in Poland

The Port of Gdynia Authority in Poland has finalized its tender process for operators at the Public Ferry Terminal, first announced in June 2025. Stena Line has been awarded a contract to operate at the terminal from 2026 to 2032, securing the continuation of the Gdynia–Karlskrona ferry service, which is recognized as part of the EU’s Motorway of the Sea transport network.

This contract is seen as a sign of the commitment shared by both Stena Line and Port Gdynia towards sustainable development and environmentally responsible shipping in the Baltic region. Stena Line plans to introduce several operational enhancements during the new contract period, including round-the-clock freight handling, automated drop-and-collect systems, and hybrid electrification of vessels. These initiatives will strengthen the Gdynia–Karlskrona route as a key maritime corridor linking Scandinavia and Central Europe while supporting EU climate objectives.

Stena Line’s management emphasized that maintaining an ongoing presence at the Public Ferry Terminal will facilitate the further development of Gdynia into a modern logistics hub. The partnership is rooted in the shared goals of innovation, sustainability, and reliable service for both passengers and freight.

Stena Line has been operating the Gdynia–Karlskrona route for thirty years, having transported over 12 million passengers and 2.5 million freight units. The service is currently supported by three vessels, including two advanced 240-meter E-Flexer ferries. Stena Line moved its operations to the Public Ferry Terminal in Gdynia in June 2022.
