Holyhead: The Gateway Managing Wales’ Surge in Cruise Shipping Traffic

Wales has experienced a significant boost in cruise ship visits, reporting 84 arrivals in 2025—a remarkable increase from just 41 in 2021. This jump highlights the region’s emerging reputation as a favored cruise destination.

Among Wales’ five cruise-capable ports—Cardiff, Swansea, Milford Haven, Fishguard, and Holyhead—Holyhead has proven to be the busiest, accommodating 55 of the 84 visiting ships. The port is equipped to handle vessels up to 300 meters (984 feet) in length, and for those that exceed this size, a tendering system allows for the transfer of passengers from ships to shore, making it accessible for larger cruise liners.

The cruise industry contributes approximately £3.8 billion to the Welsh economy each year, and the increased traffic from cruise visitors is expected to further enhance spending across coastal communities, particularly in sectors such as hospitality, tours, retail, and cultural attractions.

Wales’ rich cultural heritage, breathtaking landscapes, and a network of ports offering diverse experiences—including historical castles, natural wilderness, and vibrant towns—make it an attractive option for both cruise operators and passengers.
