Historic Solent Ferry Operator Red Funnel Acquired by Private Equity Firm

Red Funnel, a ferry operator with a history spanning back to 1820, has recently been acquired by the UK investment firm Njord Partners as of late September 2025. The company, once managed by a consortium of British and Canadian pension funds since the 1990s, is set to embark on a new chapter under private equity ownership.

Both Red Funnel and Njord have acknowledged that financial struggles have impacted the ferry operator in recent years. Njord indicated that "significant indebtedness" had restricted Red Funnel’s ability to invest in necessary infrastructure and enhance service quality. This situation has raised concerns among local communities and elected officials, particularly regarding rising fares and the reliability of the ferry services, which are deemed essential for the Isle of Wight.

The challenges facing Red Funnel are not solely financial. In 2024, after purchasing the Hythe Ferry service, issues arose when significant repairs were needed at the Hythe pier berth. Service was halted in August 2024 and has yet to resume as of August 2025.

Fran Collins, CEO of Red Funnel, described the acquisition by Njord as marking the start of a "new chapter," providing a stronger platform for pursuing long-term goals. Njord highlighted its expertise in maritime and hospitality sectors, with a portfolio that includes Ambassador Cruise Line and Geoquip Marine.

For over 164 years, Red Funnel has been instrumental in providing transit across the Solent, connecting the Isle of Wight with Southampton. The fleet features specialized Ro-Pax ferries and high-speed Red Jet catamarans, operating over 30,000 annual sailings—about 11,800 by its vehicle ferries and 18,600 by fast passenger vessels. In recent times, Red Funnel has transported more than 2.3 million passengers and over 857,000 vehicles to East Cowes, in addition to carrying more than a million high-speed passengers to West Cowes.

In the competitive Isle of Wight ferry market, Red Funnel faces rivals like Wightlink and Hovertravel. There have also been local efforts to create competition, such as a bid from Vectis Ferries intended to establish a high-frequency service, though this endeavor did not succeed.

Njord has committed to restoring Red Funnel’s financial health and operational efficiency, but there are ongoing concerns from Isle of Wight MPs and community observers regarding the potential shift of the ferry network’s focus from public service to profit generation.
