Holyhead: The Hub of Wales’ Growing Cruise Shipping Traffic
Wales saw a remarkable rise in cruise ship visits in 2025, with a total of 84 arrivals, more than doubling the 41 visits recorded in 2021. This surge highlights Wales’ increasing popularity as a cruise destination.
Among its five cruise-capable ports—Cardiff, Swansea, Milford Haven, Fishguard, and Holyhead—Holyhead took the lead, accommodating 55 of the 84 ships.
The port’s facilities are capable of handling vessels up to 300 meters (or 984 feet) long. For larger ships that cannot dock, a tendering system is in place, allowing passengers to be transported ashore from anchored positions, ensuring that even the biggest liners can access the port.
Cruise tourism contributes around GBP 3.8 billion to the Welsh economy each year, with the growing number of cruise visitors boosting spending in coastal communities, hospitality services, retail, and cultural attractions.
Wales attracts cruise operators and passengers alike due to its rich history, stunning landscapes, and a network of ports that serve as gateways to various experiences—ranging from ancient castles to beautiful natural settings and vibrant towns—all conveniently located near the sea routes.
