Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth Makes Historic Debut as Miami’s Newest Homeport Ship
Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth cruise ship has made its debut in PortMiami, marking the beginning of its first extended winter Caribbean sailing season from Florida. This 2,081-passenger vessel, which first sailed in 2010, is notably dedicated to the late Queen Elizabeth II, whose presence is felt throughout the ship with various tributes.
Recently revitalized in a three-week refurbishment, the ship boasts new spaces and fresh aesthetic enhancements. Among its offerings for the Miami season is an innovative production of the acclaimed musical “Come From Away.” This show, which won multiple Tony and Olivier awards, tells the true story of Gander, Newfoundland, and its hospitality towards thousands of stranded airline passengers following the September 11 attacks.
Scheduled to premiere on October 26 in the Royal Court Theatre, the production has been adapted to fit a compact format for the cruise setting, featuring a 12-member cast and two performances per sailing. Actor Joe Hilliard, involved in the production, emphasized the emotional journey of the story, encapsulating kindness and community amidst tragedy.
Kevin Tuerff, who lived through the events that inspired the musical, further reflected on the compassion shown by Gander’s residents during that time. He recounted waiting on a grounded flight for 15 hours before experiencing the remarkable hospitality from local communities.
Improvements made to the ship include a redesign of the iconic Queens Room and enhancements to other areas such as the Commodore Club and the Garden Lounge. New dining options also feature a health-oriented menu introduced through the Pavilion Wellness Café.
During its inaugural season in Miami, the Queen Elizabeth will offer voyages lasting from 9 to 28 nights, visiting several Caribbean destinations. Cunard has curated exclusive experiences for guests, such as catamaran trips and guided tours designed to deepen connections with the visited locales.
As it opens a new chapter in its voyage history, Cunard aims to deliver memorable experiences infused with its signature luxury and hospitality. Prices for these voyages begin at $1,070 per person, based on double occupancy.
