MSC Group Takes Significant Steps in Shore Power Integration at Valletta Harbour
The MSC Group’s Cruise Division has made remarkable progress in its decarbonization efforts by successfully connecting both the MSC World Europa and EXPLORA II to shore power at Valletta’s Grand Harbour on October 15 and 16, 2025. This historic achievement marks the first time an Explora Journeys vessel has utilized shore-side electricity in Europe.
The event was attended by Malta’s Prime Minister, Dr. Robert Abela, along with other government officials. Dr. Abela emphasized Malta’s commitment to sustainable maritime operations, highlighting that the shore-power facilities at Grand Harbour are part of a national investment aimed at cutting emissions, enhancing air quality, and promoting sustainable tourism.
Since its activation in 2024—when MSC World Europa was the first to plug into the system—MSC vessels have accumulated approximately 300 hours of shore power use, which has yielded an emissions reduction equivalent to 15 days of standard operations at the port.
This milestone coincided with the 20th anniversary of the GreenPort Congress and the “Decarbonising the Future” Conference, underscoring Malta’s dedication to the European Union’s Fit for 55 objectives, which mandate that all major European ports offer shore power by 2030.
Pierfrancesco Vago, Executive Chairman of MSC Group’s Cruise Division, remarked that this success illustrates the benefits of strategic investment, innovation, and partnership in achieving significant environmental advancements. He noted that Malta is pioneering in operationalizing shore power in the Mediterranean and expressed gratitude for the Maltese Government’s ongoing support in developing sustainable port infrastructure.
All MSC Cruises vessels built since 2017 are equipped for shore power connection, with retrofit efforts underway for the existing fleet. Currently, 18 out of 25 ships within the Cruise Division have the capability to connect, with plans for more installations ahead.
In 2024, MSC Cruises recorded 142 successful connections to shore power across 13 ports, more than tripling the previous year’s total. The Group is committed to expanding shore-side electricity access globally to further reduce emissions during port calls and enhance the overall environmental sustainability of maritime operations.
