French Riviera Finalizes New Regulations for Cruise Ships: What You Need to Know
New cruise-ship regulations have been established for the French Riviera, specifically affecting the ports of Nice, Cannes, and Villefranche in the Bay of Cannes. These changes were initiated by the Prefect of Alpes-Maritimes and the Maritime Prefect of the Mediterranean.
According to the new prefectural decree, each port will limit the number of disembarking passengers to an annual average of 2,000 per call, with a maximum cap of 3,000. Additionally, ships that accommodate over 1,300 passengers will be restricted to making only one visit per day per port, allowing a total of just 15 such visits each month during July and August.
The regulations aim to prioritize cruise companies that follow the “Sustainable Cruise in the Mediterranean” charter. Furthermore, if pollution levels peak, additional limitations on port calls may be introduced.
These regulations will officially take effect after a 21-day electronic public consultation period.
