Stena Line Unveils Stena Connecta: Its New Methanol-Ready Hybrid Vessel

Swedish ferry operator Stena Line recently held the naming ceremony for its latest NewMax hybrid Ro-Ro vessel, the Stena Connecta, on October 16, 2025, at the China Merchants Jinling Shipyard in Weihai. This new vessel is specifically designed for the Belfast–Heysham route, with plans to begin regular service in January 2026. The Stena Connecta is a sister ship to the Stena Futura, which was launched in September 2025, and together they aim to increase freight capacity on this route by approximately 40%.

The Stena Connecta measures 147 meters and has a freight capacity of around 2,848 lanemetres. Its innovative multi-hybrid propulsion system allows it to operate on battery power, bio-fuel, and methanol. Additionally, it features two Norsepower Rotor Sails, which can help save up to 9% in fuel during operations in the Irish Sea.

Niclas Mårtensson, the CEO of Stena Line, noted that these two new vessels embody cutting-edge maritime technology and are crucial for maintaining transport links between Ireland and the UK. Furthermore, they contribute to the company’s commitment to reducing CO₂ emissions by 30% by the year 2030.
